Batato Batani Vagu - Temple Style Mangalore potato peas curry - Jain Recipe

We all love eating in temples right? Especially we Mangaloreans just love that temple food, that mouth watering rasam, Amchi Kuldev Dalitoy, Chane Ghashi, and some Godshe like Khichdi. But sometimes there are other variety of curries which are super tassssty and I call it tasssty because It gives extra taste without using Onion and garlic.
One such recipe is our favourite Batato Batani Vagu.
There are variety of recipes for this too.. some make it only with potatoes, some potato and peas, some add cauliflower to it but my ultimate favourite is combination of batani and batato ( peas and potato).
So now lets check out the recipe.

Ingredients

Potato- 3 medium sized
Peas- 1 small cup
Tomato- 1 small
Grated coconut- 1 tbsp
Coriander seeds - 1tsp
Red chilli - around 5
Tamarind - small piece
Coconut oil- 3tsp
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Curry leaves - 10
Hing - 1/2tsp
Salt to taste
Water as required

Method

1. Take a pan and dry roast red chilli and coriander seeds.
2. After it cools, grind it together with coconut, tamarind and water to smooth paste and keep aside.
3. Now take a wok and add coconut oil.
4. Once oil heats up add mustard seeds.
5. After it pops add curry leaves and hing.
6. Add tomato and saute for a min.
7. Add boiled and cubed potatoes and mix well.
8. Add salt now and give a mix.
9. Now add ground paste, some water, peas and cook for 10 min with lid closed.
10. After 10 min you can see oil seperating, so its the time to switch off the flame.

You can garnish with coriander leaves, but this is optional, I dont prefer it!!
